Stephanie Budhan: Editor-in-Chief

My name is Stephanie Budhan and I am a chemistry major in the Honors College. I am from Smithtown, NY which is located 10 minutes from campus, so I am a commuter. My interests in science are expansive, thus joining SYBIR is a great way to be exposed to different types of science via literature. Furthermore, I am interested in pursuing research in the future, perhaps in psychology. In my free time, I like developing independent research projects, listening to old Hindi music, and spending time with friends and family.

Jesse Pace: Head of Cabinet

My name is Jesse Pace and I am a junior majoring in Biochemistry with a minor in Bioengineering. I grew up on Long Island in the small town of Malverne. Apart from SBYIR, I am a member of the Honors College where I volunteer as a Big Sib mentor for incoming freshman students. I’ve been a member of Phi Delta Epsilon, the international premedical fraternity since my freshman year. Anyone who knows me knows that I am very passionate about my research in the lab of Dr. Sandeep Mallipattu at Stony Brook Medicine’s Division of Nephrology and that one of my favorite movies is Finding Nemo.

Hi! My name is Lauren Yoon and I am a junior. Outside of SBYIR, I do research as a part of the World Trade Center Personality Study under Dr. Roman Kotov in the Stony Brook Psychiatry department. In my free time, I enjoy taking pictures, attempting to knit, and baking.

Nomrota Majumder: Managing Editor

My name is Nomrota Majumder and I’m a freshman Biology major on the pre-med track in the Honors College. SBYIR combines my passion for both scientific research and academic writing, which is why I look forward to everything it has in store for me during college. I’m also a part of Badminton Club and Stony Brook’s South Asian Student Alliance (SASA). In the future I hope to continue to pursue my love for neuroscience and conduct ischemic stroke research on campus. In my free time I enjoy singing, dancing, and watching Friends on Netflix.

Nita Wong: Associate Editor

My name is Nita Wong, and I’m a sophomore double majoring in biochemistry and Spanish. Writing has always been one of my greatest passions, and I am extremely excited to contribute to future SBYIR publications and help shed light on both amateur and professional research. Aside from academic and on-campus pursuits, I have been trained in classical music and recently received my Diploma in piano performance from ABRSM. In my free time I enjoy running and reading and am an avid fan of Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

My name is Nina, and I am a Biology major with a minor in Ecosystems and Human Impact, in the WISE Honors Program. My research involves investigating stochastic gene expression and fitness consequences of expression outliers. I love teaching and supporting my peers; I mentor new undergraduates in the lab, have been a TA in the Biology and Chemistry Departments, and am a member of Brothers and Sisters in Christ. Anyone who knows me knows that I am strangely fond of taking long walks and learning biostatistics.

My name is Caleb Sooknanan, and I am a junior biomedical engineering major in the Honors College. This is my third year participating in SBYIR, and I believe that this organization truly has the potential to encourage scientific literacy across our campus. SBYIR has given me the opportunity to explore my research interests and strengthen my ability to understand the research occurring on campus and around the world. Aside from SBYIR, I am the Vice President of 3Diatrics, a MedHacks Campus Ambassador, a member of Stony Brook University’s 2017 iGEM Team, and an undergraduate teaching assistant for the Chemistry Department. I am also involved in BASIC and Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, and for fun, I enjoy listening to jazzy hip hop music, working out in the Recreation Center, or spending time in the Innovation Lab.

My name is Claire Garfield and I am a Biology major/Marine Science, Chemistry, French minor. I joined SBYIR to keep involved with what’s going on in science, especially the aspects that are outside my comfort zone. Outside of SBYIR, I’m a member of the Honors College and Environmental Club, and I’m a research assistant in the Collier lab studying environmental microbiology. I hope to pursue a PhD in Biological Oceanography. In my spare time, I enjoy scuba diving, swimming, and hiking.

My name is Priya Aggarwal, and I am a sophomore Human Evolutionary Biology major on the pre-med track in the WISE Program. Through SBYIR, I hope to learn more about different scientific advancements going on in the world and to help further scientific literacy. Outside of SBYIR, I am a member of 2018 Stony Brook iGEM Team and Events Coordinator for the Stony Brook Bhangra Team. On the off chance that I have spare time, I enjoy taking naps.

Gabriela Zanko

My name is Gabriela Zanko and I am a freshman Engineering Science major on the pre-med track in the Honors College. I was born in Poland, and currently live in Maspeth, a small town in Queens. I joined SBYIR because I enjoy writing/editing as well as learning about new research, so becoming an Associate Editor seemed like the perfect fit. Aside from my interest in the sciences, I enjoy singing and attend SBU’s Gospel Choir rehearsals. In high school I worked on a research project involving bilingualism and lexical access, and I hope to continue that line of research or discover something new I’m interested in here at SBU. In my spare time, I enjoy having spontaneous dance breaks from homework and singing karaoke with my suitemates.

I joined SBYIR to keep up with the ongoing research happening on and off-campus yet at the same time develop my stamina for reading long research papers. In my free time, I enjoy fixing bikes, binge-watching shows on Netflix and eating out with family and friends.

Rohan Dayal

Hello there. My name is Rohan Dayal. I’m a freshman at Stony Brook University studying computer science. I am also part of the Honors College. Within computer science, I am most interested in artificial intelligence and data science. I strongly believe in making information accessible and understandable to the public; for that reason, SBYIR’s commitment to disseminating cutting edge research strongly appealed to me. I’ve done research applying computer science to many social issues, so hope to learn more about such research and engage in it. In my free time, I enjoy learning different languages, doing fun projects in computer science (member of SBCS), reading about history, and following sports – I am a massive Liverpool FC fan.

My name is Rohan Shah, and I am a junior majoring in biochemistry with a minor in professional writing. I joined SBYIR because it is the culmination of my interests: scientific research and writing. More importantly, I believe this organization has the ability to increase scientific literacy across the campus. Aside from SBYIR, I conduct research in the Department of Anesthesiology at Stony Brook Hospital, am an EMT at the Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and am a member of the Stony Brook Raaswalas. In my free time, I enjoy listening to music, taking pictures, and playing basketball and football.

Hannah Philipose

My name is Hannah Philipose, and I’m a freshman Biology major in the Honors College. Joining SBYIR seemed like a fitting way to combine my interests in both STEM and writing while staying up to date on novel research findings in a wide range of disciplines. Aside from SBYIR, I volunteer as an EMT and am part of the rowing team on campus. I am passionate about my past research in ophthalmic drug discovery, and hope to continue similar work as part of Dr. Markus Seeliger’s lab in the Pharmacological Sciences department. Some of my hobbies include running, baking, and graphic design.

Jessica Hui

My name is Jessica Hui, and I’m a sophomore biology major and writing and rhetoric minor on the pre-dental track. I joined SBYIR because I wanted to learn more about scientific writing and about what is happening in the field of research. I also wanted to combine both my interests in science and writing in order to raise awareness for research on campus. In addition to SBYIR, I am the historian for the Japanese Student Organization and the secretary for the Photography Club. I am also a writer for SBU Odyssey, an undergraduate chemistry TA, and a research assistant at the Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine. On the side, I love to write poems, I really enjoy kayaking, and I watch Master Chef religiously.

Debolina Chanda

My name is Debolina Chanda and I am a second-year student majoring in Biology with a minor in South Asian Studies. Since high school, I have had a passion for science research and scientific language. I joined SBYIR because I wanted to gain knowledge in various fields of science and new research through the literary compositions of my peers. In my free time, I like to dance. I’ve always been very fond of dance so I joined two dance teams at Stony Brook! I’m secretary of Taandava which is Stony Brook’s very own classical Indian dance team! I’m also Public Relations for SBU Bhangra, a cultural dance team that showcases the folk dance of Punjab!

Hello! My name is Kimberly Lu, and I am a sophomore biochemisty major and a WISE Scholar for Medicine. I love being a part of SBYIR because as an editor, I have the opportunity to not only write, read about, and stay updated on the newest breakthroughs in science, but also to help communicate these findings to the Stony Brook community through SBYIR journal publications. Aside from SBYIR, I’m involved in stem cell engineering research on campus and play violin and viola for the Music and Medicine Club. In my free time, I enjoy playing badminton, swimming, and spending time with friends and family.

Riya Gandhi

My name is Riya Gandhi, and I am a sophomore biochemistry major with a soon-to-be declared Creative Writing minor in the University Scholars Program. I joined SBYIR to expand my interest in sharing an interest in research both locally and abroad; however, along the way, I discovered that SBYIR also gave me the chance to spread interest in scientific literature across campus, which is ultimately the biggest reward. Aside from SBYIR, I am part of Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps and I am a University Scholars Fellow. In my free time, I enjoy listening to music, having movie nights with my suitemates, and boxing through Pink Gloves Boxing on campus.
