My name is Sahil Rawal and I am a Biology Major/Health and Wellness Minor in the Scholars for Medicine Program. I am also a member of the Honors College where I am a part of the Big Sibling Program to acclimate new students to Stony Brook. Outside of SBYIR, I am the Report Lead for the President’s Council of Student Advisors and an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant for BIO 204. In my free time, I enjoy hanging out with my friends and watching sports.

 

Peter Alsaloum: Head of Cabinet

My name is Peter Alsaloum and I am a Biochemistry major in the Honors College. I am from Yonkers, NY, a large city just north of the Bronx. Apart from SBYIR, I am a member of Stony Brook’s Campus Community Emergency Response Team. Also, I am a TA for Organic Chemistry and a Lead Tutor at the Residential Tutoring Center. I currently do research in an Organic Chemistry lab at Stony Brook University School of Medicine. I also serve as a CAS Senator on the Undergraduate Student Government. I plan on attending medical school in the future. In my free time, I enjoy playing basketball, hiking and hanging out with my friends.

 

Dana Espine: Layout Chief

My name is Dana Espine, and I am currently majoring in Anthropology and Philosophy. My hometown is New Market, Minnesota with the great lakes and where they make you go to school in -35 degree weather. Other than SBYIR, I am a staff member of Weekend Life Council and I enjoy collecting gundams and snap chatting. My guilty pleasure is watching animal documentaries on Netflix before I go to bed.

 

Jenna Mallon: Managing Editor

My name is Jenna Mallon and I am a senior double majoring in Chemical and Molecular Engineering and Applied Math and Statistics. Joining SBYIR has been one of the best decisions I have made as an undergrad and I cannot wait to see how the organization continues to grow. Apart from SBYIR, I am the Treasurer of the American Chemical Society. When I’m not in school I horseback ride competitively and love to hang out with friends, read, and go to the beach.

 

Rachel Kogan: Managing Editor

My name is Rachel Kogan and I am a junior Biology major with a Neuroscience Concentration in the Honors College. Being a part of SBYIR for the past two has been an incredible experience and I am excited to see how the organization continues to grow this year and in years to come. Aside from SBYIR, I am the Vice President of Pre-Dental Society, a counselor and Outreach Committee member for Camp Kesem, and an Honors College Big Sibling. Additonally, I am a research assistant in Dr. Lorne Golub’ s lab in the Department of Oral Biology and Pathology and an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant for BIO204. Outside of school, I enjoy watching binge watching Tasty videos, drawing, and searching the internet for a pet goat.

 

Julia Jun: Assistant Layout Chief

My name is Dahae (Julia) Jun and I am currently a junior majoring in Psychology while minoring in Writing. Besides SBYIR, I am an active member of Korea Campus Crusade for Christ (KCCC), Secretary of National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS), and a tutor for Research and Writing in Psychology. I also participate in Dr. Ryan Parson’s lab as a research assistant with hopes of entering the field of neuroscience. I love taking road trips and camping, but most of the time you can find me binge-watching Friends.

My name is Samara Khan, and I am a junior Biochemistry major in the University Scholars program. This is my second year with SBYIR, and I’m excited to continue being part of such an impactful organization. I am currently a part of the Stony Brook University iGEM team, and hope to be involved with other labs in the future. Outside of SBYIR, I am a Make the Magic Coordinator for Camp Kesem, a writer for The Humanology Project, an AIDS Peer Educator, and play cello for the University Orchestra.

 

Bridgette Nixon: Associate Editor

My name is Bridgette Nixon and I am currently double majoring in Biology and Psychology. This is my first year as a part of SBYIR, but I love that it allows me to combine my two interests of research and literature. Besides SBYIR, I’m on the pre-med track and love to do research in regard to post-traumatic osteoarthritis. In my spare time I like to play sports, cook, study foreign languages, travel and watch Netflix.

My name is Lillian and I’m a senior double majoring in Anthropology and Human Evolutionary Biology on the pre-PA track. Joining SBYIR has allowed me to learn more about others and myself who are aspiring researchers, physicians, and people genuinely interested in science. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to be involved in a premier undergraduate science journal and learn about science and other research opportunities from my fellow peers. Apart from SBYIR I am a research assistant for the Stony Brook Medicine Biomedical Informatics Dept., a geriatric intern at the Stony Brook Primary Care Center, Public Relations for the Happiness Club, trainer and member of the Red Watch Band CARE Team, and Treasurer of the Photography Club. When I have free time, I enjoy taking pictures, eating free samples from Trader Joes, and hanging out with good company.

My name is Anna and I am a junior on the pre-medical track hoping to make a career in neurology or neuroscience research. I am currently a research assistant at Stony Brook’s Cognitive Neuroscience Lab under Dr. Hoi-Chung Leung. Apart from editing for SBYIR, I am also part of the Honors College and volunteer at NYU Langone Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. In my spare time I enjoy learning foreign languages and traveling, as well as trying new cuisines.

My name is Nomrota Majumder and I’m a freshman Biology major on the pre-med track in the Honors College. SBYIR combines my passion for both scientific research and academic writing, which is why I look forward to everything it has in store for me during my first year of college. I’m also a part of Badminton Club and Stony Brook’s South Asian Student Alliance (SASA). In the future I hope to continue to pursue my love for neuroscience and conduct ischemic stroke research on campus. In my free time I enjoy singing, dancing, and watching Friends on Netflix.

My name is Aaradhana Natarajan, and I am sophomore double majoring in Biology and Anthropology. I am passionate about research (especially in neuroscience and genetics) and hope to conduct some of my own. Along with SBYIR, I am also a member of the University Scholars program. Outside of science, my hobbies include running, television, reading and writing. My not-so-secret favorites are science fiction and fantasy, but I will read almost anything.

My name is Caleb Sooknanan, and I am a sophomore biomedical engineering major in the Honors College. This is my second year participating in SBYIR, and I believe that this organization truly has the potential to encourage scientific literacy across our campus. SBYIR has given me the opportunity to explore my research interests and strengthen my ability to understand the research occurring on campus and around the world. Aside from SBYIR, I am the Vice President of 3Diatrics, a MedHacks Campus Ambassador, a member of Stony Brook University’s 2017 iGEM Team, and an undergraduate teaching assistant for the Chemistry Department. I am also involved in BASIC and Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, and for fun, I enjoy listening to jazzy hip hop music, working out in the Recreation Center, or spending time in the Innovation Lab.

My name is Dan and this is my second year at SBYIR as a Copy Editor. SBYIR has allowed me to combine my two passions for journalism and scientific writing. I look forward to becoming part of a community that shares the same interest in scientific research as I do—the comradeship is invaluable. In addition to be involved in SBYIR, I am also active in the Neuroscience Axis (historian), Biochemistry Society (outreach coordinator), Baruch Hall Council (vice president), and Premedical Society. Furthermore, I volunteer at SBU Hospital and am a mentor for the Kelly Quad Event Planning Committee. My hobbies include reading, playing the ukulele, and watching competitive cooking shows.

My name is Benjamin Kerner and I am a senior Psychology major and Business minor looking to pursue Industrial Psychology. I am deeply passionate about anything pertaining to Psychology and Business as well learning languages aside from English. Currently I can speak English, Spanish, and Hebrew and am studying German. Additionally, I am looking into studying abroad and expanding my knowledge of cultures across the globe.

My name is Jerin Thomas and I am a cabinet member and the photographer for SBYIR. I am currently a junior Biochemistry Major on the Pre-Med Track. I am a tutor for the Residential Tutoring Centers, and I am also a TA for the Undergraduate Chemistry Department. I am also the Vice-President of Fundraising and Outreach for Stony Brooks Alternative Spring Break Outreach and an Undergraduate Research Assistant. I enjoy biking, taking pictures, hanging out with my friends and I have recently learned to love rowing as a novice member of the Stony Brook Rowing Team.

My name is Ronak Kenia and I am a senior studying Computer Science and Applied Mathematics & Statistics at Stony Brook University. My name is Jesse Pace and I am a sophomore majoring in Biochemistry with a minor in Bioengineering. I grew up on Long Island in the small town of Malverne. Apart from SBYIR, I am a member of the Honors College where I volunteer as a Big Sib mentor for incoming freshman students. I am currently a teaching assistant for CHE 152 and I’ve been a member of Phi Delta Epsilon, the international premedical fraternity since my freshman year. Anyone who knows me knows that I am very passionate about my research in the lab of Dr. Sandeep Mallipattu at Stony Brook Medicine’s Division of Nephrology and that one of my favorite movies is Finding Nemo.

My name is Nita Wong, and I’m a freshman double majoring in biochemistry and Spanish. Writing has always been one of my greatest passions, and I am extremely excited to contribute to future SBYIR publications and help shed light on both amateur and professional research. Aside from academic and on-campus pursuits, I have been trained in classical music and recently received my Diploma in piano performance from ABRSM. In my free time I enjoy running and reading and am an avid fan of Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

 

Stephanie Budhan

My name is Stephanie Budhan and I am a chemistry major in the Honors College. I am from Smithtown, NY which is located 10 minutes from campus, so I am a commuter. My interests in science are expansive, thus joining SYBIR is a great way to be exposed to different types of science via literature. Furthermore, I am interested in pursuing research in the future, perhaps in psychology. In my free time, I like developing independent research projects, listening to old Hindi music, and spending time with friends and family.
