In 1956 at a workshop organized by John McCarthy at the Dartmouth Summer Research Program, the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) was born. His goal was to figure out ways that machines could be able to stimulate aspects of intelligence. People who attended this workshop began to lead significant projects under the field of AI. From 1956-1974 the field of artificial intelligence flourished. During this time period computers became more affordable, faster, and easy to access. As time went on this field continued to grow bigger. Recently the use of artificial intelligence started becoming a problem.
The use of artificial intelligence is reducing opportunities for students to learn creativity. Throughout the years AI has become more accessible to the public. With applications like ChatGPT, Socratic by Google, and Siri students are able to use AI whenever they want. In addition apps like Instagram and Snapchat have their own AI servers where you are able to ask any question you want. An article written by CNN on the concerns parents have about Snapchat AI states, “ChatGPT, which is trained on vast troves of data online, has previously come under fire for spreading inaccurate information, responding to users in ways they might find inappropriate and enabling students to cheat. But Snapchat’s integration of the tool risks heightening some of these issues, and adding new ones.” In this time where social media plays such a big role in society, AI being in the palm of our hands is a very dangerous game. Some students may abuse AI because they are too lazy to do their school assignments by themselves, or are lacking motivation to do so. Artificial intelligence is reducing the opportunities for students to learn creativity because AI generated content is based on things that are already found on the internet. Artificial intelligence is based on patterns and data. This process lacks the uniqueness and individuality that the human brain is able to come up with.
The main problem is that the use of artificial intelligence may cause students to lose their confidence in their own abilities to create. Chances are that students use AI because they can’t think of anything on their own. So they use AI to give them ideas. An article written by NYU says, “One of the foremost challenges is preserving the artist’s unique voice and authenticity. AI-generated content might sometimes dominate the creative process, losing the artist’s individuality and emotional depth in the final artwork.” If the use of artificial intelligence becomes normalized in the classroom it can lead students to rely on AI too much. Furthermore, if students become too dependent on artificial intelligence it can cause them to lose their ability to innovate and think critically. Since, AI would be doing all the work for them.
Artificial intelligence being introduced in the classroom can harm students’ ability to think critically, and also lose their problem solving skills. An article written by Educause states, “This highlights how important it is for teachers to craft questions and assignments that not only test knowledge but also stimulate deeper thinking and analysis.” It’s important that teachers make assignments that allow students to use their critical thinking skills in the classroom because it will allow them to have the opportunities to put these skills into practice, and not be heavily attached to artificial intelligence. Not only are these skills and techniques important in the classroom, but they are extremely important in society. These skills are crucial for students to have to be able to have a chance to succeed in society. Artificial intelligence limits and reduces the opportunities in which students can put these skills to use. When students use AI it may help get them thinking, but most of the time they just copy what the AI generated response was, and change one or two words. Over time this eliminates the creative process, and the proficiency of completing assignments.
In conclusion, the use of artificial intelligence reduces the opportunity for students to learn creativity. Artificial intelligence takes away from the creative process that students take to complete assignments. Most AI applications use resources that are already available on the internet and they combine them to form their response. This process does not amount to the creativity and individuality that the human brain can produce. The more that AI becomes normalized, the more inclined students are to become less creative. AI takes away from the authenticity and uniqueness of a student’s voice. When students use AI it dulls the amount of creativity they have because the computer is doing all of the work for them. The use of artificial intelligence reduces the opportunity for students to learn creativity.
